More about GoPro cameras

When thinking about which GoPro to get, it might help to consider why the little cameras were invented in the first place.

Nick Woodman, a surf aficionado, once lamented that most photographers couldn’t get close enough to surfers in order to capture quality action photos.

So, after saving up some money from selling bead and shell belts off the back of his VW van and getting a loan from his parents, he started `Woodman Labs’ and started developing camera systems that could fulfill that initial vision.

The company was later re-baptized as GoPro and the rest is history. So now you know they aren’t only for taking more intricate selfies.

But upon getting one, the best bet should be to ask yourself, ‘what do I need this for?’

How to know which GoPro is right for you

The main difference between GoPro models relies on the quality of their video (resolution, and number of frames per second) and photographs (how many megapixels and fps per burst).

The other features that vary are whether they have touch display, WiFi connectivity, voice control and whether they are waterproof or not.

The main two considerations would be, what kind of quality are you expecting from your future GoPro? All Hero models feature 1080p @ 30fps (which is Full HD) or 720p @ 60 or 120 fps, which can still be considered HDTV.

If you’re just going to shoot home videos for your personal use, you might not need to blow $499 in a Hero 6 or 5 just to shoot in 4K.

But then there’s the question of audio, which is usually impaired by the housing. All Hero’s below the 5 are not waterproof, so you need a housing if you’re going to take them underwater. But some types of housing might seriously impair the audio quality in your videos.

The Hero5 eliminated that problem by simply being fully waterproof. But are you really going to take it underwater? Do you really need high-quality audio for what you’re planning to shoot?

What about accessories?

Another cool thing about GoPro is the line of accessories they’ve constantly been updating to go along with their cameras.

There are stabilizers such as the Karma Grip, tripods, rechargeable batteries and the GoPro Karma Drone.

The latter was introduced in October 2016. After less than a month, it had to be recalled due to reports of total loss in electrical power during operation. The battery latch was then redesigned and the Karma hit the shelves again last February.

But the public’s trust is hard to regain, so after moderate sales throughout the whole year, and serious competition from other players such as DJI, this year’s Cyber Monday and Black Friday are sure to bring interesting deals for the Karma drone. The site Blackfridaydealer.com, for example, predicts a price cut of up to $150 on the drone.

On the other hand, the Karma Grip is unlikely to see major discounts during Cyber Monday and Black Friday, since it has been selling well and it’s already one of the cheapest stabilisers for GoPro, as well as one of the most moderately priced GoPro accessories.

GoPro 2016 Black Friday Deals

When trying to figure out just how low is low enough for a Black Friday deal, it always helps to keep in mind the deals that went down the year before.

For GoPro’s, 2016 only reported some mild offers. Nothing like 50% off, but good deals nevertheless. Here are some of the ones we found across the internet and decided to highlight:

  • The GoPro Hero Session bundle, which is usually priced at around $199, was as low as 179.99 at places like Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Other places such as Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods offered the same deal but included around $20-$25 dollars in gift cards or in-store cash.
  • The GoPro Hero4 Silver was seen for $50 off in certain locations such as Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club. This was in a bundle that also included a dual-battery charger, a 16GB microSD, and an extra battery.
  • Higher-end GoPros like the Hero5 and the Hero5 session were not seen at a discount last year, but some places sold them with little rewards such as $40-$60 dollar gift cards.

What Else Should I Get on Cyber Monday and Black Friday?

The following products always have great deals in November. Check them out:

One Last Note

As you may have noticed, there’s a tendency towards the lower-end or older GoPro models getting the significant discounts, while the latest models don’t really see major price drops.

Don’t be discouraged though, even the Hero 6 is likely to see some sort of discount or gift card deals on 2017.

Also, since the 6 is now available, that means that price drops for the other models might be slightly fore dramatic than last year.
