An Overview of Sonicare Electric Toothbrushes
Are you ready to make the switch between a manual toothbrush to an electrical one? Or perhaps you’ve already converted to the electrical brush clan but you are considering switching brands?
Well, if a Philips Sonicare Electric Toothbrush is within your options and you’re somewhat confused about which one to buy, you’ve come to the right place.
Even if you’ve just narrowed it down to Sonicare, there are tons of options; making it tough to know which one is the perfect fit for your particular dental needs and your budget.
So we’ve put together a little guide to help you choose. This will include information on the different Sonicare Toothbrushes, buying recommendations, and even some great resources put out by Philips itself.
In case you might have missed them we’ll link them below. But before, let’s take a look at what you should be considering when shopping for a toothbrush in the first place.
And of course, be sure to run any piece of advice you find here or on other sites with your dentist before settling on any particular product.
What do you want a toothbrush for?
I mean yeah, cleaning your teeth, but that little phrase can extend to three different focuses: plaque removal, gum health and whitening.
So, the first step in order to choose a brush is deciding (after consulting your dentist) on what your focus is at this particular point of your life.
If you’d like to focus on all three of these, Philips does make a toothbrush that will reasonably meet all of those needs. That’s the DiamondClean Smart.
Philips Sonicare Toothbrushes: Main Types
Now, before we go into which toothbrush is best for what, we should clear up something that will make you actually understand what you’re getting into with each toothbrush, category type.
Philips Sonicare, makes electric toothbrushes in the following groups:
This is the Sonicare premium line of electric toothbrushes. Their main focus is on whitening teeth but they are good for all needs. Their main difference with other lines are features, accessories and their elegant designs.
In other words, they include more luxurious accessories such as a charging glass and charging travel cases that sometimes even include electric shavers.
The category also has two main lines, the regular Diamondclean, and Diamondclean Smart. The main difference is that the latter includes an app that provides you with personalized coaching thanks to its smart sensor suite.
Price range is between $219.99 (basic Diamondclean Sonic) and $329.99 (Diamondclean Smart 9700 Series).
This lines gets its name due to its “flexible” performance. Meaning that Sonicare technology is combined with 4 brushing modes on each brush. These are regular “clean”, “gum care”, “white” and “sensitive”.
In other words, it’s a more budget-friendly way (most toothbrushes are priced somewhere around $150) of taking care of the main three tooth-care objectives.
If you want to focus more on a particular area, that’s where the FlexCare line starts to divide into more specialized subcategories. These are:
FlexCare+: Adds “massage” to the brush modes, which is nice for people who want to focus on gum care.
Then there’s the FlexCare Platinum Connected, which also features sensors that send your brushing data to the Sonicare app via Bluetooth.
This also means personalized coaching like with the Diamondclean smart, it’s simply a more modest brush in terms of design and accessories; thus priced at $199.99 – $219.99.
If you’re really into staining drinks such as coffee and red wine, but have really good oral hygiene otherwise, this is something you might want to look into.
The Healthy White+ (priced at $119.99) features only 2 modes (clean and white) and 1 brush head, but also has 6 customizable settings that let you mix and match between the modes and its 3 intensities.
2 Series Plaque Control
You may have noticed that as we move below the Sonicare family of electric toothbrushes, they start to get more specific but less pricey.
The 2 Series Plaque Control focuses on Plaque Removal. That’s its single mode. As such, it features only one brush head and comes with nothing but its handy charger.
You can get this one for $69.99.
3 Series Gum Health
What the former toothbrush is to plaque, this one is to gum care. It’s meant to prevent and reduce all early signs of gum disease, while also offering superior plaque removal.
Since it’s meant to care for your gums, it features 3 intensity settings within its single brushing mode. This one starts at $89.99.
In case you have good oral hygiene overall and don’t really need to focus on any particular problem, this is a basic electric toothbrush that by far exceeds the performance of manual brushes without breaking the bank.
The Sonicare Essence is priced at $24.99. But there’s also the Essence +, which features superior plaque removal and more available colors, all at $39.99.
Sonicare for Kids
And of course, tooth care needs vary according to age. Philips Sonicare also has a special toothbrush made for little ones aged 3 and up.
It’s priced at $49.99, but features bluetooth wireless technology that connects it to its own app. This one is also made for kids, educating them on how to brush by themselves in a fun and dynamic way.
If that wasn’t enough, it also comes with eight different colorful handle stickers so each kid can give his or her brush the look they want, and even change it as often as they like.
How To Choose The Best Sonicare Toothbrush For You
Now, going back to what you want your toothbrush to do in the first place, the people at Philips were kind (and savvy) enough to recommend one of their brushes according to each objective.
They did so in this blog post of theirs, but you can simply read on to get a quick version of their advice.
Here it is in a nutshell…
If your main concern is plaque:
- Best option to fight plaque while caring for gums: FlexCare Platinum electric toothbrush (from $199.99)
- Best Option just to keep plaque in check: 2 Series plaque control electric toothbrush (from $69.99)
If your main concern is gum care:
- For gentle yet effective gum cleaning: FlexCare+ electric toothbrush (from $149.99)
- For an easy gum-health solution: 3 series gum health electric toothbrush (from $89.99)

Finally, if you want an ever more personalized recommendation, the guys at Philips truly over delivered by developing a “Toothbrush Advisor” that you can consult online for free.
You get to input data such as lifestyle (whether you travel a lot, eat lots of sugar, etc.), teeth particularities (sensitivity, plaque…), gums (whether they’re healthy, swollen, receding, etc.) and even your dentist’s input.
After all that, the tool provides you with a toothbrush recommendation just for you.
Pretty neat huh?
