The Best Espresso Machine Types, Brands (& More)

There is something great about espresso. As soon as it touches your lips, it makes you awake, focused and ready to start the day. If you are a fan of the popular coffee named espresso, you would probably like to have your own machine at home – and just sip a shot every now and then when you get the coffee bean cravings.

Well…

Now, that is more than possible – and today – we are listing the most popular types of espresso machines and their proud manufacturers. So, let’s begin.

The Different Types OF Espresso Machines

In order to give you a rough idea on some of the most popular espresso machine types, we are listing the best manufacturers and talking about their style in detail.

1. De’longhi Espresso Machine

De’longhi has a rich history and a wide reputation for being among the very first espresso brands out there. Their prices are quite affordable for the quality of espresso machines that they are manufacturing, and the designs that you can get your hands on are pretty elegant, compact and traditionally Italian.

Even though you can choose from latte or espresso, De’longhi is a company that creates a fully customizable espresso experience and machines that let you spend less time cleaning and more time sipping top-quality espresso. Their compact designs look great and are packed with programmable features based on user preferences. Most of the espresso machines include an integrated burr grinder and a 1-year warranty for any potential manufacturing flaws.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert in espresso machines, the De’longi espresso machines are a great choice. Some of the most popular models include the EC155 15 Bar Pump And Cappuccino Maker, The 15″ Bar Pump Espresso And Cappuccino Machine, The Dedica 15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine and the Magnifica Super Automatic Machine.

2. (Phillips) Saeco Espresso Machines

Saeco is a line of espresso machines designed and manufactured by Phillips. However, the name Saeco is well-known and referred to in the coffee world for its quality and longevity.

The Saeco espresso machines feature nice designs and even nicer functions. Making your own espresso can happen in the click of a single button and you can add milk at the touch of another button.

Another great feature that makes the Phillips Saeco espresso machine line recognizable is the self-cleaning feature. Literally, the machine cleans itself whenever you are switching it off or starting it up. The results are even better – each cup of coffee tastes amazing and you don’t need to worry about any burnt espresso anymore.

So, the Saeco espresso machines are great because of their easy-to-use features and the amazing process of grinding and preparing coffee. Some of the bestselling models include the Intelia Deluxe Espresso Machine, the HD8753/87 Intellia Fully Automatic Cappuccino/Espresso Machine, the EVO2 Deluxe Super Fully Automatic Espresso Machine (HD8758/57) and the HD8759/47 Superautomatic Espresso Machine.

3. Breville Espresso Machines

Breville is another brand that manufactures affordable espresso machines that are nicely designed, amazingly functional and always delivering the perfect espresso cup.

Even though the Breville espresso machines may require some effort to operate compared to all the fancy super-automatic machines, the attractive and user-friendly machines that this brand manufactures have outstanding value, knowing their relatively affordable price.

The bestselling machine by Breville is undoubtedly the

Barista Express

– an espresso machine that offers just enough adjustable features and settings that lets you design your own espresso perfection. Whether you are a barista or not, you can easily pick up the main features and see why the taste of the Breville espresso machines is popular around the world.

Made from stainless steel chassis, most of the Breville’s espresso machines give the impression that you are using them for business. They are compact, nice to use in any ambient and come with semi and super automated features. Some of the other popular models on the market include the Breville Oracle BES980XL, Breville Duo-Temp Pro BES810 and the Barista Touch BES880XL espresso machines.

4. Rancillo Espresso Machines

Some would say that the Rancilio espresso machines are not that good looking in comparison with brands like Saeco or Breville. However, they function in a very similar way – and can definitely get you the joy of a professional quality espresso ready at your fingertips.

With more than a reasonable prices, the Rancillo espresso machines are truly recognizable on the market for their quality and long lasting durability. So, if design is not your primary choice when buying an espresso machine and just want to make quality espressos for a long time, Rancillo is certainly a brand you should consider.

Even though the Rancilio SILVIA espresso machine is their bestselling model (and our recommended choice), you can also check out the other products and purchase the one that mostly fits to your needs.

5. Gaggia Espresso Machines

Last but not the least in our list of espresso machines and brand manufacturers is Gaggia – another Italian classic manufacturer that knows how to produce a machine that delivers the perfect espresso. When compared to other brands, the Gaggia feels more compact and more structured than most of the espresso machines out there.

So, the look and feel are both premium and there are many control options featured on front of the Gaggia espresso machines. Their price is also very affordable, especially when you consider the great performance, flexibility and durability of these machines.

The bestselling model is the Gaggia 1401 Classic Espresso Machine, but you can also check out the Gaggia Babila One-Touch Coffee and Espresso, the Gaggia Anima XL Super-Automatic Espresso and the Gaggia TS Espresso Machine.

What else should you consider getting?

Before we end this post, here are some popular items other people are getting this week:

What to Expect This Year

The only problem with a product as time tested and classical as a device for making coffee is that it follows a very consistent pattern. You don’t tend to see huge changes in the way that coffee technology change – or the market around them.

This is one of the key things to be aware of before shopping for an espresso machine this Black Friday. With the coming sales, we have two general things that you can probably expect:

1. Reasonable, predictable sales similar to the past few years

2. Better products being sold for less than they usually are

These two come with a pretty low-risk, low-reward sale. They might fit our favorite niche of consumer electronics – where sales tend to be very sharp – but they are also predictable in their demand and you can’t change the production of coffee that much with a machine. The changes in recent years are small, something that reflects in sale trends.

When we look at espresso machine sales in the last ten years, its clear that the main trend is normalization.

We’ve seen this product move from an “aspirational” product with celebrity powerhouses like George Clooney being used in huge marketing campaigns to a product that many of us can afford as a luxury.

This is pretty normal and we understand the processes behind it, so what we’re looking for this year is going to be gradual increases on the products and sales we saw in 2016 and 2017. The 2018 black Friday sale is informed by these changes, so we can make some predictions using the data and experience they provide.

What Was On Sale in 2016 & 2017?

The previous black Friday sales for espresso machines are, obviously, varied. The brand makes a big difference, as does the store at which you look. Taking a quick survey of entry-level or mid-tier models, the trend discussed above is clear: prices remain relatively similar and see pronounced dips during sales.

In fact, the price of comparable models over the past few years have fluctuated up and down between $200 and $240. However, during big sales, this type of mid-tier espresso machine has been seen as low as $125. This is clearly a good precedent for the sales that are coming up this year: reductions around 40% or $100 are both welcome.

This is one of the best examples of both short- and long-term bargains. The RRP of the product is creeping down and has become an affordable luxury item, while the sales themselves make it a great chance to get a slice of extra luxury at a very affordable price.

What Will Happen in 2018?

In 2018, we’re expecting trends to continue in this direction. With an RRP between $170 and $200 right now, reductions in-line with the 40% we’ve seen in the past could spell mid-tier espresso machines coming down to $100 and the more premium models dropping below $200.

As a luxury, the ability to buy a better model for a similar price has some merit. This is especially true if it comes bundled with coffee pods/capsules or it has a lower operating cost. Remember that you only have to save a few cents from each cup to make a bigger upfront investment worthwhile. Trimming 0.05c off your per-cup cost adds up to $$$ over the lifetime of an espresso machine.

Make sure to keep your eye on popular brands that are under the pressure of increased competition and slowly-dropping RRPs. These companies are going to be able to drop prices and see big buys on black Friday, while smaller brands and more premium products are likely to be a better choice for the following cyber Monday.
The trends we’ve seen so far point to a small, incremental drop in the prices of espresso machines over time and reliably-huge sales. We’re hoping that this year comes off well, continuing this trend and showing us a mid-tier espresso machine for a two-digit price tag.

At the very least, it’s a great time to make big savings for the rest of the year – especially if you tend to get expensive coffee on the go!

A Final Word

In the end, there are two types of espresso drinkers out there in the world – ones who don’t care where their elixir comes from – and ones who like to perfect their own cup of espresso at home and are more than willing to ‘get their hands dirty’.

If you are the second type, we hope that your espresso machine review helped you choose the ideal espresso machine for your home, office or weekend house. Good luck!
