My 5-year-old has not one, but two electric vehicles. Not because we were bored and decided to spend our hard-earned money on Power Wheels, but because she had so much fun with her electric Jeep that we bought her a truck as well. She loves both of them for their individual qualities. For example, the Jeep has two seats, making it fun for her baby dolls to ride next to her. In the truck, she loads her toys, rocks, sticks, or whatever her little heart desires into the bed.
Ride-on electric cars for kids have come a long way since we were kids. Most of these cars now come with a plethora of features, including a working FM radio and an MP3 player, so your children can listen to their favorite tunes, as well as LED lights, and working gear shifters. Some even have leather seats and two-point seat belts for the ultimate driving experience. You can also find some that come with a remote control so we as parents can be sure our little drivers are staying safe and out of the roadways.

What Should I Look for When Buying an Electric Car for Kids?
The best battery-powered ride-on toys come with a lot of the same features as a real car. From an MP3 player and a working FM radio or real-life sound effects to LED lights bars, seat belts, and a safe brake system, many of these cars are loaded with options. However, there are several factors you’ll want to consider when purchasing electric kids cars.
Criteria #1: Consider the recommended age and weight capacity of the vehicle
While electric toy cars are typically recommended for ages two to eight and some being designed specifically for children as young as 12 months, it’s even more important to pay attention to the weight capacity of the vehicle. For most single-seat models, the weight limit is approximately 40 pounds while two-seaters can handle up to 130 pounds.
Criteria #2: Contemplate the safety features of the electric car
The best electric cars for kids these days come with countless safety features. Many include two-point seat belts, power lock capabilities, a brake system that allows the vehicle to stop as soon as your child lets off the gas pedal, and separate parent remote controls so that you’re in control. You can rest easy knowing that your children are safe when driving around in their electric cars, but be sure to supervise at all times. These cars can be pretty heavy and will hurt if you get hit by one.
Criteria #3: Compare the batteries of your electric car choices
The speed at which these electric cars travel depends on what battery type you choose for your kids’ car. Almost all of these cars for kids come with a 12-volt battery, but you can upgrade to a 16-volt or 18-volt battery. Some even have a 24-volt option. The 12-volt electric vehicles can go up to four miles per hour while the 24-volt electric cars can reach a speed of up to six miles per hour. Keep in mind, however, if you upgrade your battery, it might void the warranty.
Also, note that these batteries take about 18 hours to charge straight out of the box. After that, it can take about 14 hours to recharge. You’ll want to plan for this before your kids get all excited to jump on and ride around in their new vehicle.
Criteria #4: How many seats do they have?
You’ll want an answer to this question if you have two or more children. To avoid arguments and disputes (and to save you unnecessary headaches), look for a two-seater. If you only have one kid, the ATVs and quads are a good choice.
Criteria #5: How much do they cost and can you buy them used?
The cost is something to consider whether you’re on a budget or wanting to splurge. These electric cars can cost anywhere from $200 to $450. The best Power Wheels with all the bells and whistles will cost even more. The good news is you can purchase them used from garage sales, online yard sales, or from some place like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or even Craigslist. The rule of thumb here is to get the car’s background and to take it for a test ride before purchasing.
Here’s How We’ve Determined the Best Electric Car for Kids
To determine the best electric toy cars for this list, I not only looked at consumer reviews, I considered the options and features for the price and recommended age and weight for each vehicle.
#1: Power Wheels Dune Racer, Green (Best Value)
Recommended age: 36 months to seven years old
Max weight limit: 130 lbs.
One of the best Power Wheels for kids, this Dune Racer is the best choice for outdoor fun. The Power Wheels Dune Racer has a drive system that allows it to go on hard surfaces, rough terrain, wet grass, and mud. It can also travel a speed of up to five miles per hour, which is pretty typical of these types of vehicles. This vehicle offers an open cockpit with metal handlebars and the Power Wheels power lock brake system. This system ensures the vehicle stops as soon as the child lets off the gas, making it one of the better safety features.
It Has a 7R Gearbox
The 7R gearbox is one of the strongest gearboxes available. This rare and hard to find box gearbox with a 15-tooth motor brings with it more power and torque than the other vehicles on this list. It’s also mounted in such a way that it minimizes the stress on the electric car when starting and stopping.
After reading the reviews, you’ll find this Power Wheels vehicle is durable and sturdy enough to last for several years, even with the toughest and roughest of children. This is good news for those with kids who are just learning to drive an electric car. It’s also a two-seater, so your kids don’t have to share their turns. Yay!
Parents love that this kid’s electric car sits low to the ground. This ensures that, as long as they stay seated, the car won’t flip over. Huge points for safety.
#2: Radio Flyer Tesla Model S for Kids (Best Splurge)
Recommended age: 36 months to eight years old
Max weight limit: 81 lbs.
If money is no object and you’re looking for the best of the best, look no further. The Radio Flyer Tesla Model S has you covered. This electric car for kids looks just like the real thing with its authentic detailed designs that include working LED headlights, a working horn, and an auxiliary input. It even charges directly through the charger port giving your child the full Tesla experience.
This Electric Car Comes With A Lithium-Ion Battery
This ride on car is the first and only car for kids that is lithium-ion battery powered. The lithium-ion technology provides for a longer run time and faster charge time, giving your child three times the playtime than that of other electric cars.
The Car Is Fast
For a kid’s electric toy designed for smaller kids, this car goes pretty fast. The Tesla S has two speeds and can reach speeds of up to six miles per hour. It travels at three miles in reverse.
Reviews by parents say that this car is the perfect fit for their little ones with long battery life. This is a high-quality electric car.
#3: Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle (Best For Rough Terrain)
Recommended age: 8 years and up
Max weight limit: 120 lbs.
The Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle is the best choice in battery powered ride on toys for those looking for that quad, or four-wheeler, effect. This Power Wheel looks just like a quad, except it’s for little people. Give them an adventure they’ll never forget.
It’ll Conquer Tough Trails and Big Bumps
No need to compromise with this off-road vehicle. The Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle is built to go off-road. No more driving on the sidewalk or trying to stay on smooth, level ground. Watch as your kids take on those tough trails and big bumps. The 13-inch knobby tires aren’t likely to spin like the plastic tires of other kids’ electric cars.
It Has Hand Operated Power
If it’s going to look like a quad, it may as well drive like one, right? This off-road vehicle features a twist-grip throttle control for variable speed and acceleration control with a hand-operated rear disc brake. You won’t be able to get your kid off their Razor.
Much like the Power Wheels Dune Racer in #1 above, this vehicle also has the metal handlebars and Power Wheels power lock brake system. The metal frame and solid motor unit make this a favorite of parents everywhere. It’s not as likely to dent or chip as other Power Wheels if your child runs into something. The only drawback is there is no governor, so it can go a bit faster than some parents are comfortable with. The vehicle can reach speeds up to eight miles per hour. So, keep that in mind if you are wanting to purchase for a smaller child.
#4: 12V Licensed BMW I8 Kids Ride On Car (Best Low Cost)
Recommended age: 37 to 96 months
Max weight limit: 66 lbs.
If you’re looking at the best electric cars for kids but don’t want to spend a fortune, consider the 12V Licensed BMW I8 Kids Ride On Car. This cool and stylish car has a speed of three miles per hour, making it one of the slower vehicles. It was the first electric car my daughter owned. I’ll be honest, at just under two years old, I wasn’t sure she’d be able to handle it. I was right . . . at first. She was a bit skeptical and slightly scared when the car moved, but she soon learned how to operate it. She fell in love and hasn’t looked back since. And that, folks, is how we got started in our electric car-buying journey. (But I digress.) This is an amazing car for younger drivers.
It Comes with a Parental Remote Control
The parental remote control lets you, as the parent, control the car. This not only keeps your child safe as they learn to maneuver the steering wheel, but it also gives you peace of mind. As you turn with the remote control, it also turns the steering wheel on the car, so your child can learn left and right. It also allows you to control the speed. There are two speeds for forward and one for reverse, as well as a brake button. Let me just say, this thing was a life-saver for my heart!
It Has Unique Musical Features
This kids’ car comes with some pretty neat musical features. It has an MP3 player interface, a USB port, and a TF card slot for portable devices. Your little one can choose to listen to built-in music or change the radio to a story mode to help them learn musical literacy while driving.
The one-seater kid’s car is recommended for ages 37 to 96 months and has a weight capacity of 66 pounds. Choose your child’s favorite vehicle color choice – black, white, or red. It also has cool features like a working horn, water-resistant tires and seatbelts, and a forward/reverse shifter to give your little one that exciting driving experience.
#5: 2020 Ride On Car Mercedes for Kids (Best for Luxury)

#6: Fisher-Price Power Wheels Ford Mustang (Best for Toddlers)
Recommended age: 36 months to five years old

The Fisher-Price Power Wheels Ford Mustang is no exception. This electric sports car is great for your young children to learn about the ins and outs of driving.
This Is a Great Learning Vehicle
Geared for kids ages three years old and up, this electric sports car for kids is the best choice for little ones and has great learning potential. Like most of the cars on this list, there are two forward speeds moving you up to five miles per hour, and one reverse speed at about two miles per hour. Your child will learn to go forward and backward, change speeds, steer, stop, and go. The physical motion is good for their development of motor skills, balance, and body awareness.
It Looks Like a Real Sports Car
The Fisher-Price Power Wheels Ford Mustang looks just like a real Mustang. It comes with sporty chrome wheels, realistic-looking pretend seat belts, and a cup holder. It even has sound effects with cool motor sounds and real music on the pretend radio.
The reviews are great for these electric cars for kids. Parents like that the doors don’t open for added security and are sturdy and well-built for a long-lasting car. Most of the owners were purchasing for children between the two to four age range.
#7: Power Wheels Jeep Wrangler (Best for Themed Ride On Toys )
Recommended age: three to seven years old
Max weight limit: 130 lbs.
Another Fisher-Price toy car, this one has most of the same features as the other electric cars on this list. Reaching a top speed of five miles per hour, it has two forward speeds and one slow speed in reverse. The car also has power lock brakes for added safety, and the high-speed lockout option lets you increase the speed when your child is ready.
You Can Get It in Themes
Unlike the other electric cars we’ve looked at, this Power Wheels Jeep Wrangler has themed options. Girls might like the Disney Princess or the Sunny Day themed vehicle, while Hot Wheels is a popular theme for the boys. There are even Jurassic Park and Toy Story 4 options.
It’s Ready for an Adventure
The Power Wheels Jeep Wrangler is one of the best electric cars for adventure-driving. Recommended for three- to seven-year-olds, your children will have a blast taking this car for a ride. This electric car looks just like the real Jeep Wrangler, complete with the distinctive Jeep grille, roll bars, and rugged front and back fenders.

The car also comes with an integrated MP3 player with AUX audio input and plays files from your Micro SD card, USB Flash Drive, or external devices like your tablet or smartphone.
This Car Has Long-Lasting Run Time
One of the best things about this car is its battery. Unlike most of the other electric vehicles on this list, this battery only takes between one and five hours to charge and has a riding time of a whopping hour and a half. That’s incredible considering most other cars only last for about 30 to 45 minutes per charge.
