In this article we’ll take a look at all the ins and outs of the 614 and examine what makes this model so popular. We’ll also look how it compares to other models so you can have all the information you need to decide whether this is the right robot vacuum for you.

Chances are, by now you’ve seen, heard of, or investigated robot vacuums. These vacuums have been on the market for a number of years now and the technology just keeps making them better and better. These automatic vacuum cleaners can really make it easy to keep your house or apartment clean with very little effort. Here is everything you need to know about the 614 specifically:

Features

Let’s start with taking a look at the basic features of the 614 and examine what you can expect from this model. The 614 is iRobot’s entry-level, no-frills model. This does not mean that it is cheap or undesirable, it only means that it lacks some of the advanced features of the upper-end models. The 614 is a great option for those wanting all the convenience of an automated vacuum, but who also do not need all the bells and whistles of other models. So what are the features that come with the 614? Let’s take a look:

AeroVac Technology

At the heart of the Roomba 614 is iRobot’s AeroVac technology. This technology streamlines and optimizes the vacuuming process to provide for the greatest cleaning efficiency. The technology involves a three-stage process to ensure that all the dirt, debris, or hair on your floors gets vacuumed up.

The first stage of the cleaning process involves a side-rotating brush. Because the Roomba is circular in design, it is unable to vacuum right up against walls. So, the side brush rotates up against the wall and moves all the dirt and debris into the path of the vacuum. This provides for wall to wall vacuuming coverage.

The second stage involves a set of rotating brushes at the center of the machine. These are similar to the traditional brushes you find on a standard vacuum cleaner. The difference of the Roomba is that it uses two sets of brushes which rotate in opposite directions in order to move all the dirt and debris up into the vacuum cleaner. These counter-rotating brushes are powerful enough to loosen particles and hairs from carpets so that they may more easily be caught up by the vacuum.

The third stage of the cleaning process involves the machines powerful vacuum. This sucks the dirt and hair kicked up by the brushes and directs it through into the bin. This process evenly distributes the collected matter into the bin which avoids clogging or premature loss of suction due to a full bin. This three-stage cleaning process means that the 614 will give your floors excellent coverage and efficient vacuuming.

AeroVac Filter

The 614 collects dirt, debris, hair, and other dust particles through the AeroVac process and filters it through the AeroVac filter. While other iRobot Roomba models contain higher filtration systems, the AeroVac Filter does a good job keeping dirt from circulating back into your rooms. This filter will need to be cleaned depending on how dirty your floors are. The filter will catch most dirt and hair to keep your rooms clean.

iAdapt Technology

When you turn your 614 on and it starts the cleaning process, you might notice that it passes over the same places more than once. This is due to the iAdapt technology which uses sensors to detect dirt. The zigzag movement of the iAdapt allows the Roomba to survey and explore the areas of your rooms that need the most attention. So, do not be surprised if it spends more time in one area than another.

This iAdapt technology is also what allows the Roomba to maneuver around your furniture, under your furniture, and detect walls. It also senses the presence of significant level changes, like stairs. So, you do not have to worry about it falling down the stairs, it will avoid them automatically. The mapping technology will ensure that all your rooms are covered and that the vacuum avoids obstacles.

The technology will also detect when the battery is low and will return the Roomba to its docking station for recharging. So, you do not have to worry about whether or not there is a great enough charge to finish the job.

Lithium-ion Battery

One of the great features of the 614 model is that it comes with a rechargeable Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Most other models will come with a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-Mh) battery. Li-ion batteries are usually more expensive, but they last longer than Ni-Mh batteries. So, for a less expensive model, you get longer-lasting batteries! This is a great bonus for this entry-level vacuum.

Pros and Cons

As we look over the 614, it has a lot going for it. But like anything, there are pluses and minus to this model. Let’s take a look at what some the 614’s Pros and Cons.

Pros

It won’t break the bank: The first great plus for the 614 model is that it is a great, inexpensive, entry-level model for those looking to experience automatic vacuum for the first time. You will not have to break the bank to buy the 614. The price for this model will vary depending on any deals or sales you might find. Because the price will change frequently it is a good idea to check Amazon for the latest, lowest price.

It will clean everywhere: Another great “pro” of this model is that you will get wall-to-wall coverage.  iRobot is known for its industry leading vacuuming technology. The 614 is able to get up under your furniture and right next to your wall so that every inch of your floors are covered.

Batteries last longer: As we pointed out early, the lithium-ion batteries included with the 614 are superior to Ni-Mh batteries of more expensive models. These batteries have a longer life so that you will not have to replace them nearly as often.

Cleans everywhere: The 614 is also great for any sized room. Whether you have a large floor space or just a small apartment, the 614 can handle it. As long as you just going over flat surfaces, this model can handle various floor types including carpet, wood, laminate, or tile.

Cons

The main drawbacks to the 614 are not design flaws. iRobot manufactures excellent products. The main negatives with regard to this model are the lack of features that you find on higher-end models.

Not Great Air Filtration: For example, starting with the 700 series and higher, the Roombas feature a HEPA filter. The 614 comes with a standard filter that does not catch nearly the amount of dust particles as the HEPA filter. If you suffer from allergies and need greater filtration, you will want to look for a model with a HEPA filter. However, if this is not a concern for you, the AeroVac filter does a decent job keeping large particles from being recycled into the air.

No “Bin Full” Indicator”: Another possible downside to the 614 is that it does not come with a bin indicator. This light lets you know when the bin is full. Because the 614 does not have this feature, you will have to regularly check to see if the bin is full. This might be a hassle depending on how much dirt it has to pick up on a regular basis.

No Programmable Scheduling: The 614 also has no scheduling option. The only for this model to work is to manually start it. Other models come with a scheduling feature that automatically starts the cleaning process at regular intervals. If you want the greater convenience, you might consider a model with this feature.

No Virtual Wall Options: Finally, the 614 is not compatible with the virtual wall, virtual lighthouse, or virtual barriers. These are nice features that allow you extra control over which rooms it will be able to access and clean, as well as in what order. With the 614, it will simply start cleaning and continue to clean all rooms on a single floor. There is no way to control or limit room access. This may be a minor point for some, but if there are places you do not want the Roomba to go, you should consider a model that is compatible with these virtual assistants.

Is the Roomba 614 Difficult to Operate and Maintain?

If you are at all concerned about operating the 614, you will be relieved to learn that it is as easy as the press of a button! Because this model does not have any scheduling features, all you have to do to begin the cleaning process is turn the machine on. The onboard computer will begin zigzagging around your space looking for dirt and monitoring the power level of the battery. If the battery gets low, the Roomba will automatically return to its docking station to recharge and then head back out until your room is clean.

The collection bin will also need to be emptied between cleaning. If you have a particularly dirty floor, the bin may need to be empty more often, but once between cleans is normal. The AeroVac filter should also be cleaned when the bin is emptied. If you clean this out frequently and wash the dust out of it, you do not have to buy a new filter. However, additional AeroVac filters are available if you feel more comfortable getting a fresh one from time to time.

The bottom line is that the 614 is very easy to operate and maintain. You do not need any special skills or computer know-how. You should not be intimidated by the notion of having a “robot” in the house, it does all the work for you!

How Big is the Roomba 614?

Almost all iRobot’s models have the same dimensions if you are concerned about whether or not it will be able to maneuver well around your house and your furniture. This model is 13.9 inches in diameter and 3.6 inches tall. This is the clearance you will need for the Roomba to be able to get around and under furniture in your house. Furniture that is closer together than 13 inches will need to be separated if you want it to be able to get in between them.

The 614 is fairly lightweight, weighing only 7.9 lbs. So, if you ever do have to move it manually, you should not have any trouble. But rarely do Roomba users ever need to pick up their robots. It may happen from time to time that the Roomba might have difficulty going from drastic level changes like from tile to thick carpet. In these cases, you might have to give it a bit of a lift. However, these issues seem to be a rarity amongst users, but it is a possibility.

Does the Roomba 614 Work on Stairs?

Unfortunately, the iRobot technology has not yet advanced to the point where their robots are capable of navigating stairs. However, the iAdapt technology will ensure that your Roomba will not fall down the stairs. This keeps you from having to worry about the robot being damaged should it encounter a level difference that causes it to topple over.

How Does the Roomba 614 Compare?

So, how does the 614 compare to other iRobot models? Let’s take a look at some of the models that are most often compared to the 614 to see how they stack up.

Roomba 614 vs 620

If you’ve been comparing these two models trying to figure out the difference, you’ll be looking for a long time. That’s because these two models have exactly the same features. They differ only in their physical design and appearance. So, if you’re trying to decide which one is right for you, you just have to decide which one looks best!

Roomba 614 vs 630

The 630 is an older model of iRobot vacuums that replaced the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery of the 614/620 with a nickel–metal hydride (Ni-Mh) battery. The differences between these two batteries will be slight to the end consumer. Generally speaking the Ni-Mh batteries are less expensive, weigh slightly more, but do not last as long as Li-ion batteries. Both batteries hold a charge well and will last for a long time. iRobot discontinued manufacturing the 630 and replaced it with the 650. However, you can still find some 630s on the market and can be a decent way to save some money on a robot vacuum.

Roomba 614 vs 650

The 650 is one step up from the 614/620 model. It also replaced the 630. So what’s the difference? The 650 has a Ni-Mh battery instead of a Li-ion battery, but you will not notice any performance difference based on the batteries. The major difference between these two models is the ability to schedule the cleaning time. With the 650, (as well as the 690) you will be able to preset the robot to operate up to seven times every week. When the scheduled time comes, the 650 will start cleaning and return to its dock when complete.

The 614 does not have this schedule option. Instead, you will need to manually start the 614, which is not difficult since it is just the touch of a button. If you really like the 614 but want the automated scheduling function, then the 650 is the next closest model with which you can do this.

Roomba 614 vs 770

While the differences between the 614, 620, 630, and 650 were slight, the differences between these models and the 770 are significant. First, the 700 series comes with iRobot’s AeroVac2 technology. This is an upgrade to the standard AeroVac technology which brushes debris into the flow of suction and finally into the storage bin. The AeroVac2 technology does all this but also optimizes the design to make it clog resistant and even stronger vacuuming suction. In addition, the 770 upgrades the AeroVac filter to a HEPA (High-efficiency particulate arrestance) filter. This provides for greater filtration of fine dust particles.

Second, the 770 comes with a “full bin indicator” which lets you know when you need to empty the bin. With the 614, you will have to check frequently to see if the bin is full and make sure it is clear and not causing the vacuum to lose suction.

Third, the 770, like the 650, can be scheduled to run at regular intervals, up to 7 times per week. The 614 has to be started manually. Plus, with the 770, you get a remote control to make the programming easier. This is not an option with the 650 model.

So, if you really want an upgrade to the 614, the 770 model is a great option with many advanced features. However, it will come with a higher price tag, so you will have to keep in mind whether these features are worth the higher price for you.

Last, I want to mention the 800 and 900 series which are the best this brand has to offer.  See our review of the Roomba 860 for example.

Warranty

As is the case for most iRobot products, the 614 comes with a 1-year limited liability warranty. This means that the model is guaranteed against any manufacturer defects or parts malfunctions only. It does not cover abuse or damage. iRobot will determine how to handle any warranty issues which could range from sending you a replacement part to sending you a new or refurbished machine.

If you purchase your 614 through Amazon, you can take advantage of a 30-day return policy for any problems. You can also purchase an extended warranty through Amazon which can cover it for a longer period of time. This can give you some peace of mind should anything happen to your vacuum.

Our Verdict: The Roomba 614

The Roomba 614 is an excellent option for those wanting an entry-level, no-frills robot vacuum. Of course, “no frills” is a relative term. As we’ve seen, the features included in the 614 is like something out of the Jetsons. With this model, you will be able to keep your house clean between more thorough cleanings. It is perfect for general upkeep and maintenance. The AeroVac technology will keep your floors cleans and the lithium-ion batteries will keep it going for a long time.

It does not have some more advanced features of the upper-end models. For some, these features will be desirable for getting more done, but they are not absolutely necessary. If you want a simple robot vacuum that will get the job done, the 614 is a great option. If you don’t mind paying a bit more, then the advanced models offered by iRobot are there.

With the 614, you will have all the features you need at a reasonable price to get your housecleaning into the 21st century.
