What else do you need to know?
There are lots of good strollers intended for three kids. But before you start looking, you’ll need to decide whether you want a twin stroller with some kind of attachment, a triple in-line stroller, or a triple tandem stroller.
Do you need a triple stroller?
Even parents of triplets don’t always buy triple strollers. Since it’s not easy for one adult to take three babies out of the house, parents often choose to buy a double stroller and a single stroller.
That way, there’s an option for an adult to take one or two children, and for two adults to bring all three.
Another popular option is to buy a double stroller and a sling.
This works great for younger babies, but at about six months, it becomes tougher and not always practical. And as they get older, you may have fights over who rides and who is carried.
If you’re convinced that you need a triple stroller, the next step is to choose which type – which brings us to the question of who you need the stroller for.
Choosing the type
Before you choose a triple stroller, it’s important to be very clear on who you’re buying it for. If you have a baby and twin toddlers, you may not need a triple stroller for very long – so a double with the option to add a third seat would be a good pick.
On the other hand, if you have a toddler and twin babies, you’ll almost certainly want a double stroller that offers the option of a third bench seat, or at least a gliding board.
Parents of triplet babies will want – and probably need – a “true” triple stroller, offering three identical seats which can be used from birth or a very young age.
Tandem or in-line?
In addition to the question of *who* you are buying for, it’s important to decide whether you’re looking for a tandem stroller (side-by-side) or an in-line stroller (one seat in front of the other).
The main advantage of an in-line stroller is that it fits on nearly every sidewalk and can go through doorways. But the disadvantage is clear:
At some point, the kids will start fighting over who sits where, and in-line strollers often have a hard time turning corners.
Also, keep in mind that it’s harder for the parent to push to see and reach the children in front.
If you do buy an in-line, be warned that the more weight in the front seat, the harder it is to push – and the more weight in the back, the easier it is to push.
Side-by-side strollers allow better access to each child and are generally easier to push than in-line strollers. The biggest drawback is obvious: Tandem strollers often don’t fit on sidewalks, and almost never fit through doorways.
And, it’s much harder to find a tandem stroller that can hold two or three car seats than it is to find an in-line stroller that can do the same.
